Relationship of Steer Gains Toquality Index of Bermudagrass Hays
نویسنده
چکیده
Seven bermudagrass hays were fed to growing steers to determine the relationship between average daily gain (ADO) and Quality Index (QI). Voluntary intake and digestibility were measured with cattle and sheep, respectively. The range in ADG was from -.3 to 1.7 lb/d, and QI ranged from .9 to1.9. The correlation between ADG and QI was quite high (r = .92). For growing steers, QI is a valid expression of forage quality and could be used to predict ADG.

Four .8-ha pastures of bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers.) were fertilized with either 456 or 873 kg/ha of nitrogen (N) from swine lagoon effluent (two replicates per treatment) and grazed by steers over two summers. Within each pasture, steers received forage only, an energy source (corn), a mixture of corn and soybean meal, or a mixture of corn and blood meal via electronic Calan feede...

This study evaluated the effects of the method of applying a commercial fibrolytic enzyme, Biocellulase A20 (A20), or ammonia to bermudagrass hay on the feed intake, digestibility, and growth performance of 50 AngusBrangus steers. Five-week fall regrowth of bermudagrass was harvested and treated with either anhydrous ammonia or A20 at rates of 3% dry matter (DM) and 15 g/ton of hay, respectivel...
متن کاملRuminal in situ disappearance kinetics of dry matter and fiber in growing steers for common crabgrass forages sampled on seven dates in northern Arkansas.
Southern crabgrass (Digitaria ciliaris [Retz.] Koel.) is often viewed as an undesirable weed, largely because it encroaches upon field and forage crops, gardens, and lawns. However, visual observations of livestock grazing mixed-species pastures suggest that cattle seem to prefer crabgrass to many other summer forages. The objectives of this study were to assess the nutritive value of crabgrass...
متن کاملApparent digestibility of nitrogen and nitrogen retention of forages fed to steers in metabolism stalls.
Holstein steers in metabolism stalls were utilized to determine apparent digestibility of N (DN), N retention (NR) expressed as a percentage of total N consumed, and Mcal/kg digestible energy (DE) when diets of seven different classes of forages were fed. The best predictive equation for digestibility of N in the 153 forages studied was DN(%) = -98.1065 + 11.4724 (%CP) + 41.4475 (DE) - .1498 (%...
متن کاملAlfalfa as an Alternative to Bermudagrass for Pastured Stocker Cattle Systems in the Southern USA
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) may support better stocker calf gains than common bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylis (L.) Pers.] in the southern USA. Yearling heifers (Bos taurus3 B. indicus) grazed each type of pasture for 2 yr on a Coastal Plain soil in southwest Arkansas. Alfalfa stand counts declined linearly with time after planting. Spring forage mass was greater for alfalfa than bermudagrass, b...
